Overview

Breast cancer is the number one cancer among Indian women with a rate of occurrence as high as 25.8 per 100,000 women and mortality of 12.7 per 100,000 women. In 2018, 1,62,468 new cases and 87,090 deaths were reported due to breast cancer in India. Research estimates that at least 17,97,900 women in India may have breast cancer by 2020 thus making the problem even more formidable in the Indian healthcare landscape.

One of the biggest reasons for the high mortality rates is late diagnosis which is primarily due to lack of awareness and the absence of proper breast cancer screening programme. the majority of breast cancers are diagnosed at a relatively advanced stage.

The Breast Centre at the CK Birla Hospital for Women offers a dedicated and comprehensive range of breast health services with a focus on holistic health. It provides an individualised approach towards breast health including breast cancer prevention and screening, diagnostics, treatment (surgeries, reconstruction and chemotherapy) and post-treatment support in the form of counselling and rehabilitation services. Our team of breast cancer experts and compassionate clinical staff combined with the state-of-the-art facility ensures the best possible experience for our patients.

We have vast experience in breast cancer resection with neo breast (Breast formation post cancer removal – either immediately or after a certain time period), breast conservation surgery with sentinel lymph node biopsy, oncoplastic breast preservation surgery, nipple sparing/skin sparing mastectomy with primary breast reconstruction and modified radical mastectomy with reconstruction. The reconstructive procedure, which is either autologous (using the tissue from patient’s body itself including microvascular free tissue transfer) or implant based, is decided as per standard guidelines. We are also one of the best centres for secondary breast reconstruction (cancer free women who want to have their breast back).

Our hospital offers a very comprehensive program for breast cancer prevention. We offer an HBOC service (service for identifying and preventing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome) due to BRCA gene. Our team is amongst the first to perform risk reducing mastectomies with reconstruction (the surgery which Angelina Jolie underwent) in this part of the world. We also offer corrective surgeries for congenital breast malformations and surgeries for granulomatous breast diseases.

If you or your loved one is at risk of having breast cancer or has breast cancer, or any other breast problem, the experts at the CK Birla Hospital for Women’s Breast Centre should be your chosen partner for diagnosing and treating your type of breast cancer.

Our Services

Prevention and Screening

India is facing a challenging situation due to a significant increase in incidence and mortality rate due to breast cancer during the last few years. The main reasons for this observed hike in mortality is due to lack of adequate breast cancer screening, diagnosis of disease at advanced stage and unavailability of appropriate medical facilities.
With a “prevention first” approach, our aim is to counsel women to make lifestyle modifications which can help prevent breast cancer and identify women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer. We offer genomic testing and analysis (presence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations). However, having a copy of mutated gene does not mean that you will certainly get breast cancer. The surgeons at the Breast Centre are best equipped to advice you on the way forward.
The Breast Centre provides screening for early detection of breast cancer for women between the ages of 25 – 80 years of age. We guide women to conduct Breast self-examination (BSE) and offer Clinical breast examination (CBE) to look for early signs of breast cancer.
The clinical examination is complemented by radiology in the form of Ultrasound for women below 40 years and an ultrasound coupled with a mammogram (Sono-mammogram) above the age of 40 years.
We also offer breast reduction surgeries as well they can improve lifestyle for some in some cases by reducing the amount of breast tissue that could develop cancer.
