Doctor Speak | Dr. Anurag Awasthi | Avascular Necrosis

Dr. Anurag Awasthi, Consultant, Orthopedics at the CK Birla Hospital for Women, Gurgaon talks about ‘avascular necrosis’ an ortho condition affecting young people. It is a condition caused due to loss of blood to the bone. Bones also require blood as they are living tissue, any sort of interruption in blood supply may cause bone to die. Generally, it affects hip region and joints at shoulder, knees, and ankles. If not treated on time, AVN may cause the bone to collapse.

In the initial stage, AVN has typically no symptoms. It gets painful as condition worsens. As the disease gets worse, it becomes more painful. At first, the bone might hurt only when you put pressure on them. Later on, pain becomes constant. If the bone or the joint or both collapses, you may have to go through severe pain which may restrict your movement. It may take several months or even more than a year between the indication of first symptoms and the bone to collapse.
