In-Vitro Fertilization or IVF Treatment

In Vitro Fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is a fertilization procedure. IVF aims to provide parenthood to couples who wish to have a baby but are unable to conceive naturally. This process is also commonly known as ‘test-tube baby’ procedure.

What is IVF?

IVF is an advanced technique used to treat the modern-day problem among couples – infertility – which prevents them from conceiving even after multiple attempts. The main objective of IVF is to help couples conceive a baby and is generally recommended in case of

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes – In this situation the egg is not able to travel to the uterus naturally as it requires a healthy fallopian tube
  • When one of both partners is over 40 years of age as fertility decreases with age
  • An infrequent or irregular ovulation cycle
  • Premature ovarian failure or hormone estrogen disorder
  • Endometriosis: when tissue is implanted outside the uterus
  • A benign tumor or uterine fibroids which interfere with the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus
  • Tubal sterilization or removal
  • Poor sperm quality
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Patients who have been treated with chemotherapy or radiation
  • Genetic Disorders
  • Psychosexual dysfunction

How does IVF work?

The patient’s ovaries are injected with fertility drugs to stimulate them. Post that, mature eggs are taken from the patient and sperm from the partner. The eggs and sperms are placed together in a petri dish. During this process few of the eggs may fuse with sperms and fertilize.

It generally takes 3 to 5 days for the fertilized eggs to grow and eventually become an embryo. Once the embryo formation is complete, they are transferred to the mother’s uterus. Post this transfer process, it is suggested to take a pregnancy test after a week or two, depending on the cell stages of the embryos at the time of transfer. This whole cycle may take up to 2 weeks.

What are the conditions contributing to the success or failure of the IVF process?

Success of the IVF procedure depends on various factors such as the age of the female partner, sperm quality, embryo status, reproductive history of the patients and reason for infertility. However, in some unfavorable or alien conditions, IVF may not be successful.

Apart from these factors there are some other points a couple should be aware of during the IVF process, such as:

  • IVF could result in multiple births (twin children or more)
  • Premature delivery or the baby being underweight
  • Patient might have Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
  • Patient might have a miscarriage due to frozen embryos
  • Mild bleeding during the egg retrieval process
  • Stress and psychological effects

These risks are minimum, and some are rare but might occur if the doctor’s advice is not followed and any leniency is adopted while carrying out the procedure.
